Triumph of the Cuban Revolution
Fidel Castro’s 26th of July Movement overthrew the Batista dictatorship. Batista fled Cuba on January 1, 1959, and Castro’s forces entered Havana on January 8.
The revolution transformed Cuba from a US-aligned capitalist state into the first socialist country in the Western Hemisphere, with profound consequences for Cold War geopolitics and revolutionary movements across Latin America.
