PhD in History from the University of Chicago. Took over as director of the Trans-Border Institute in 2014, shifting its focus toward migration, asylum, and human rights, particularly individuals and families who have fled violence in Mexico and Central America. Co-founder of the Eleanor Roosevelt College Human Rights Minor Program at UC San Diego. Has served as expert witness for the National Immigrant Justice Center.
